Flint Hills Resources announced today it is adding 5 million bushels of corn storage at its Fairbank and Menlo ethanol plants. The new ground piles will more than double each plant’s on-site corn storage capacity and are expected to begin receiving corn in early October. Read more »

Various species inhabit the wetland areas of Dunbar Slough in western Greene County.

The Dunbar Slough State Wildlife Management Area, at the moment, is a 2,134-acre public wetland complex, nestled within the Prairie Pothole Region and managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as wildlife and hunting areas. But advocates are working to have the area designated as a National Wildlife Refuge, drawing federal funds to purchase more land and expand the area — eventually including both public and private land and greatly expanding the space available for wildlife habitats and hunting. Guthrie County Conservation director Joe Hanner said he's never seen a niche type of recreation explode like canoeing and kayaking over the last 10 to 15 years. Hanner promotes outdoor activity around the county, including visits to parks, bike and water trails and tours of native prairie and wildlife refuge areas. Read more »

“Iowa’s unemployment rate continued to trend down in February,” said Beth Townsend, director of Iowa Workforce Development. “While nonfarm employment decreased slightly this month, so too did the number of unemployed workers.
