The talk of the southwest Iowa town of Audubon right now is the huge, new stained glass portrait of the town’s namesake, the naturalist John James Audubon. The Masonic Lodge, which owns one of the corner buildings in downtown Audubon, paid for the artist Clint Hansen, an Audubon native now living and working in Des Moines, to do the 18-foot-tall, 8-foot-wide portrait in glass of the naturalist. The U.S. Department of Labor on August 26 announced $1,352,776 grant to assist about 450 workers affected by layoffs at Electrolux in Jefferson and Webster City, Iowa, and three of its suppliers in Ames and Webster City, Iowa. Read more »


Dr. Maggie Wilson, DVM, has joined the staff at Audubon Manning Veterinary Clinic, as a small animal veterinarian. Wilson, a Knoxville native, got her undergraduate degree at Iowa State Universityand received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from ISU in 2009. She returned to Knoxville after graduation and worked at a small animal clinic, before joining AMVC in July. Read more »


Cusumano and Sons Produce distributes eggs from Germantown Egg Company, which is part of Rose Acre Farms. Rose Acre Farms contacted Cusumano to assure him and others who distribute their eggs that no salmonella contamination has been found in their products. “No eggs packed by Rose Acre Farms are involved in the recall,” information provided to Cusumano states. Dale Valley Vineyard of Stuart received two bronze medals in the fourth annual Mid-American Wine competition held at the Des Moines Area Community College, Ankeny Campus. Entries are now open for a unique Fun-Triathlon to be held in Jefferson on Saturday, Sept 4. Participants, starting at the Raccoon River Valley Trail Head Depot on East Lincolnway, will run and bike in the morning and bowl in the afternoon (swimming is not part of this triathlon) Between the morning and afternoon events, they are invted to join for a progressive lunch break and refueling, tour of the restaurants and pubs surrounding the Mahanay Bell Tower Square in downtown Jefferson. Senator Tom Harkin, a senior member of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee, announced last week that he successfully worked to acquire $15 million for important transportation improvements, housing initiatives and economic development projects across Iowa. Habitat for Humanity of Boone and Greene counties has been approved for a $50,000 grant from the Iowa Finance Authority to finance construction costs of an affordable single-family home in Odgen. The home will be sold to an extremely low-income family. Handicap accessibility measures will be implemented in the construction of the property to accomodate a handicapped child. Read more »

Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit Nov. 8-10 by a team reprenting The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Assocation of Colleges and Schools. Iowa Central has been accredited by the Commission since 1974. Its acreditatation is at the associate's degree level and includes degree sites at three centers within the nine-county service area. Small nonprofit organizations at risk of losing their tax-exempt status because they failed to file required returns for 2007, 2008, and 2009 can preserve their status by filing returns by Oct. 15, 2010, under a one-time relief program, the Internal Revenue Service announced this week. The Farmers Electric Cooperative of Greenfield will soon be buying power from a couple of wind turbines being installed. Wolverine Wind Energy LLC and Bulldog Wind Energy LLC are currently working on the sites in Adair County, with installation to begin next week on one of the two 105 MW turbines. Read more »

The entry deadline for the Brokers International Ltd. Iowa Open is Aug. 10, and entries continue to come in each day. The 144-player field is open to professionals and amateurs who live in Iowa, as well as golfers with Iowa ties. The tournament will be at Lake Panorama National, where it was held from 1985 to 1998.
