Guthrie Center high school graduate Lauren Hansen isn’t lounging around the swimming pool this summer.

Instead, the 18-year-old is gaining valuable career experience as a summer intern at D.Vision, Inc. in downtown Guthrie Center.

D.Vision is a 22-year-old creative services firm offering corporate branding, graphic design, illustration, photography, copywriting and more. Their office is located at 310 State Street. Dina Christensen moved to the downtown office recently after she and her husband Troy, who grew up in Guthrie Center, returned to the city several years ago with their 7-year-old son, Charlie. Troy works as a corporate attorney for an insurance company in Des Moines.

“It’s been really good,” said Hansen, who will head to Iowa State University this fall with plans to study graphic design.

Hansen, who has some design experience through classes offered at Guthrie Center schools, said she was looking for more hands-on experience before tackling the college courses.

“It’s hard in a smalltown -- I wanted some more experience, and I knew Dina had done a lot of things and I thought I could learn from her,” Hansen said.

Hansen, who is in her third week of work this summer, has already impressed her boss, as well as some clients.

“She’s amazing,” Christensen said. “I love what I do and it’s hard to find interns and freelancers who have as much passion as I do.”

Hansen put her creative juices to work right away as she began work on a flyer promoting a trip for a business in Kentucky. She gathered information from the business website, added palm trees to give the logo a tropical destination feel and re-worked some color palettes as she put together a promotional postcard.

“It was not only rewarding to complete my first real project, but to hear positive feedback on the first draft was thrilling,” Hansen said.

Christensen pointed out that the responses won’t always be so kind.

Christensen enjoys having Hansen in the office this summer and glad she can offer the opportunity to someone who wants it.

“Lauren is unique, and has a lot of natural talent, so she is well worth the investment of time,” Christensen said. “She has displayed a passion that reminds me of someone I know.”

Christensen said she had to open a lot of doors herself as she built a successful business of her own, and feels grateful when she can share some of her experience.

“Hopefully, whatever she {Lauren} can glean from me will advance her with her career goals,” Christensen said. “My hope is that it inspires her to pay it forward one day.”

She’s already doing a little bit of that by giving Charlie a lesson on string art at the office this week. His moose design proved a true work of art.

Hansen is not the first intern for Christensen, in fact, Lauren's sister Whitney also worked at D.Vision many years ago.

Over the last 22 years, she has worked with more than a dozen kids and hired multiple young freelancers.

“It seems whenever I have a client that has a son or daughter interested in a creative career, they always ask if I will take them under my wing,” she said. “I think it’s important to give young members of the community a chance to get more experience in the design and business world. Lauren called me herself. That’s initiative.”

In the meantime, Hansen says she looks forward to learning more about her field of study, while gaining valuable firsthand work experience.

“The knowledge that I gain here gives me a broader view of what I want to do,” Hansen said. “I’m thankful to find this opportunity here in my hometown.”
